Alderney Terrapin Rescue

Terrapins require specialist care, will continue to grow and do live a very long time. What might have been a manageable and cute pet, perhaps for a child, grows up into a large and needy adult. Children grow up and leave home, often leaving Mr Terrapin to the tender care of uninterested parents. Or Mr Terrapin might simply get too big for his tank.

This is understandable, if sad, and we can help. We aim to take in unwanted terrapins and tortoises from homes in the Channel Islands, but may be able to help owners from the UK as I usually make one or two trips per year to the UK. Please note, however that sliders can no longer be imported into Guernsey, so only sliders already in the Bailiwick of Guernsey can enjoy a life in Alderney.  If you are UK based, please consider one of the UK based terrapin rescue centers.

About us

I am a retired zoologist. My doctorate was from London University and I am a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London. I have a lifetime passion for reptiles and fish and have cared for many over my life. Now retired, I have created a large facility on the sunny island of Alderney, where the almost frost-free winters enable many North American species, such as sliders and musk terrapins to live wonderful and rich lives outdoors. We also have large heated vivaria for more tender species.
